Daily Readings

13 April 2025: 2 Kings 16–18

The reign of Ahaz and the encroaching Assyrian threat illustrate the familiar pattern of kings turning away from God, seeking alliances with foreign powers, and suffering the inevitable consequences. This prompts one to consider the allure of worldly security, and its ultimate emptiness.

14 April 2025: 2 Kings 19–21

Hezekiah's prayer and the miraculous deliverance offer a moment of hope amidst despair. Yet, the seeds of future destruction are sown. Manasseh’s wickedness casts a long shadow. We are reminded that even moments of great faithfulness do not guarantee perpetual prosperity.

15 April 2025: 2 Kings 22–25

Josiah’s reforms, a brief resurgence of faithfulness, include the discovery of the book of the Law, and the subsequent repentance. However, it proves too little, too late. The fall of Jerusalem, and the exile, display the utter devastation and the consequences of generations of disobedience.

16 April 2025: 1 Chron 1–2

The genealogies begin, meticulously tracing lineage from Adam to the descendants of Jacob. While they may appear as dry lists, they stand as a testament to the importance of memory and identity. These names, these lines, hold the promise of future restoration.

17 April 2025: 1 Chron 3–5

The line of David receives focus, the preservation of the royal lineage, and the messianic hope. Even in exile, the promise remains. This is not simply history, but a declaration of God’s faithfulness to his promises.

18 April 2025: 1 Chron 6–7

The Levitical genealogies, and the focus on the priestly line, illustrate the preservation of worship. It serves as a reminder that even in times of chaos, God's people maintained their connection to him.

19 April 2025: 1 Chron 8–9

The genealogies of Benjamin and the return from exile depict the rebuilding of the community, and the restoration of identity. Even after devastation, there is the possibility of renewal.
