As we prepare to begin our Bible 365 journey, one of the most important steps is ensuring you have the right Bible to accompany you. The Bible you choose will be your constant companion over the next year, so it’s worth taking a little time to select one that will best support your reading and reflection.
It’s essential to have a Catholic Bible that includes all the books recognised by the Church. Here are a few translations that we recommend, each with its own strengths:
English Standard Version - Catholic Edition (ESV-CE): This translation is becoming the standard for liturgical use in England and Wales from December 2024. It is the translation you’ll hear being read during Mass. It’s both accurate and readable, making it a great choice for this journey.
New Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition (NRSV-CE): Known for its scholarly accuracy, this translation is widely used in academic and liturgical contexts. It’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a version that’s both precise and reflective.
Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition (RSV-CE): This translation offers a more traditional tone and is respected for its fidelity to the original texts. It’s ideal for those who appreciate a classic style of English.
New Jerusalem Bible (NJB): This version balances readability with accuracy, making it accessible without sacrificing depth. It’s a popular choice for personal study and prayer.
Good News Bible (GNB): While not as scholarly as other translations, the GNB is highly readable and approachable, especially for those who may not have English as their first language.
There are many Bible apps available which puts the whole of the Scriptures on your phone or tablet. This makes it easy to read the Bible at different times of the day when you have a moment or when you’re out and about. Some people, however, prefer the feel of a traditional book, the smell and the act of physically turning the page; there is no right or wrong. Choose the one that’s going to work for you: a digital or paper Bible.
At the end of the day, the best Bible is the one that you will read. Choose a translation and format that you feel comfortable with and that encourages you to spend time with God’s Word each day.
Once you have your Bible, you’re ready to start preparing for our journey. In the next email, we’ll talk about setting up a daily reading routine and introduce the schedule we’ll be following throughout the year.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Together, we’ll explore the depth and beauty of God’s Word, growing in faith and understanding as we go.
In Christ,
Fr Christopher
